A modern vintage wedding allows the bride and groom-to-be to pick and choose favorite traditions and styles while maintaining a sophisticated wedding that never strays into theme territory.
What makes a wedding “modern vintage”? The goal for hosting a modern vintage wedding is to create an eclectic, creative, yet stylish celebration where modern style and traditional elements blend seamlessly. The trick is not to overdo anything.
Modern Vintage Wedding Fashion
A retro wedding gown silhouette, like a full-skirted 1950’s look or a straight, fringed 1920’s style, is one way to use vintage elements in wedding fashion. Another option is to bring out vintage style through accessories.
- Headpieces. Consider a vintage-inspired birdcage veil, or headbands with embellishments like feathers, beads, or silk flowers for the bridal party.
- Jewelry. Pair vintage necklaces, bracelets, or lapel pins with modern gown silhouettes for an intriguing juxtaposition.
- Handbags. Instead of bouquets, have bridesmaids carry vintage handbags. Look for fan purses, drawstring purses, and vintage evening clutches.
Modern Vintage Wedding Decor
Decorate a reception hall or ceremony site with vintage touches that add visual interest and personal style.
- Centerpieces. Wander through antique shops and malls to find ideas for creative centerpieces. Keep an eye out for watering cans, pails, teapots, and other flower holders. Use modern flower arrangements like monochrome tulips, minimalist orchids, or even bamboo and reeds to offset these vintage pieces.
- Ceremony decorations. Swags of ribbon and flowers are traditional aisle decorations. Try a version of this with elegant plants potted in copper planters.
- Head table decorations. Create an elegant head table with mood lighting: vintage candelabras or candlesticks, or small decorative lanterns. For an afternoon reception, use separate pieces from an elegant Victorian tea set to line the table’s front edge.
